Mashatu Hanging with leopards

I was recently fortunate to be invited to spend a few days in Rattray Reserves’ tucked deep into the far eastern corner of where , and meet.

The drive up is a long one, but if you can see it as part of the experience, it becomes a modern-day Hemmingway journey in itself. Leaving the mayhem and crush of and travelling north east to Polokwane and due north to Pont Drift, the roads open up, urbanisation gives way to farmlands and eventually to game farms and you can literally feel life the pace of life easing and “real” Africa getting closer.

IS ZIMBABWE BACK ON THE MAP?

Sadly fell off the African tourist map some years ago, but it is now making a slow and steady come back. With this in mind, Pulse Africa decided it was time to revisit it, to see how things have changed. So I packed my bag and headed off to Victoria Falls, Lake Kariba and Hwange National Park.

Victoria Falls Zimbabwe Pulse Africa

The National Park at Victoria Falls has reopened their restaurant, so if you want to spend a full day exploring and admiring the Falls, you have a place to stop and have lunch. These days, there is so much more to do around the falls in terms of activities. You will not be able to get bored! I even discovered they now have paintball. Everyone knows about Devils pool on the top of the falls, where in low water you can swim in a pool right on the edge of the falls, well now there is an opportunity to swim below the falls (of course only in low water! It is however quiet a hike to get to the pool, so it is recommended only for the fit!

Natasha Navigates Namibia

What not to take on your trip – an 11 month old baby…

Having recently travelled to Europe with my then 6 month old son, the idea of doing an educational trip to Namibia with my husband and my now 11 month old son didn’t seem all that daunting. I obviously knew from previous experience that educationals can be very tiring, but I hoped that as we were going to be travelling almost every day between 4-6 hours that my son would sleep most of the way and the trip would be fairly easy. I soon found out that travelling with a 6 month old is very different from travelling with an 11 month old!

Our journey started with a very early departure from O.R. Tambo International Airport. On arrival at Hosea Kutako International Airport, we were met by a local representative and transferred to Rivendell Guesthouse where we would be overnighting. The offers affordable and is well situated for clients travelling in and out of . Most of the day I spent with the owner of ATI Holidays who was kind enough to take me around and show me some of the new properties which have recently opened up in , as well as some older properties which have been refurbished. The highlight of all the properties we visited was the new Olive Exclusive! finally has a true 5 star boutique hotel, all the rooms are beautifully and individually decorated and some even boast their own private plunge pools. Kenya The Masai Mara

Born in Kenya, I spent my formative years in this wonderful country. My father was In the tourism industry and this in part led to our spending many weekends and holidays on safari exploring  the country.

My favourite park has long been the Maasai Mara. Despite its bad press – too many tourists, mini buses and camps – it is astoundingly beautiful with its huge, rolling plains, fabulous sunsets  and varied .   From just  about  any part of the park, visitors can witness a  huge assortment of within close proximity ; majestic herds of elephant , quietly browsing ;  tens of thousands of wildebeest always on the move ; prides of lion, idling away the heat of the day; gracious giraffes silhouetting the skyline; striped grazing together with and baboons, each helping the other keep a watchful eye for predators.
